WHAT IS MIPS AND WHY DO YOU NEED IT?

How does the Mips® safety system work?
The Mips® safety system is based on a low-friction bearing that is placed inside the helmet to allow the head to move 10–15 mm in relation to the helmet in all directions during certain oblique impacts, with the aim of reducing the rotational movement that the head is exposed to.

What is rotational motion?
A rotational movement can occur when the head hits the ground or an object at an angle. The impact can change the rotation of the head, which in turn can create a rapid movement in the brain or cause it to stretch.

Why are rotational movements dangerous?
The brain's shear properties (how it reacts when forces act on it in different directions) are similar to those of water or jelly. This makes it more sensitive to rotation than to linear motion. When a rotational motion causes different parts of the brain to move relative to each other, the tissues can stretch, which can cause concussions or other brain injuries.
